Gathering the necessary equipment

Now that we know where we are going and for how long, it’s time to see what we need and where to get it if we don’t already have it. The list will always change depending on what you are doing, for how long, and with whom. No two trips are the same, not even when you revisit, because you have learned with the first time and know what you need and don’t.

Simplified List

For this particular trip, three days and two nights, our list is a bit extensive, so for now, we’ll look at the basics that are needed for the hike itself:

  1. Hiking bag. This is where everything we need will go in, so it’s important to have a comfortable one that can support what we need.
  2. First aid kit. This is self-explanatory, but I recommend you read the instructions inside to be familiarized with what it contains in need of a fast response. This does not replace a visit to the ER if needed, so please assess the situation with seriousness and a level head.
  3. Water bottle. It is always good to have a good amount of water with you on long hikes. Personally, my hiking bag carries a 2 liter water bag, and I bring a 32oz water bottle that has electrolyte, for hydration.
  4. Hiking boots. Depending on who you ask, running shoes work fine, and in some cases, they’re right. However, for hikes like these, which will be heavy and muddy, a good pair of hiking boots that can help you grip the terrain and protect your ankles are a better fit.
  5. Windbreaker/Rain jacket. These are interchangeable, and are important to have because you never know when the weather will turn on you.
  6. Compass.
  7. Wistle.
  8. Food and snacks. Don’t forget to bring a trash bag to throw away the wrappers and all the food-related items.
  9. Mosquito spray.
  10. Sunscreen.
  11. Sunglasses.
  12. Hand sanitizer.
  13. Portable charger.

If you feel like there is anything else you would take on this trip, specifically in the hiking bag, please comment and share your input!
